Opportunity grows with community greenhouse
Fresh vegetables for people in need.
That’s the promise of a 2,500-square-foot greenhouse under construction at Savocchio Opportunity Park in Erie.
The new structure is the second phase of the Grow Erie project. The four-season garden opportunity is the latest step toward fulfilling the Minority Community Investment Coalition (MCIC)'s commitment to uplifting the East Erie community.
Phase 1 of Grow Erie was the commercial facility, which grows basil and microgreens for Curtze Foods.
In May, the facility also began a partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest Pa., delivering its first order of butter lettuce. By making fresh, healthy produce available to those who would otherwise lack access to it, Second Harvest and partners like Grow Erie encourage the community to eat healthier and make better nutritional choices.
MCIC will oversee the community greenhouse, with operations by local families. Construction is expected to be completed by June 30.
